Homeschool Summary - Fall 2013

HISTORY
The Story of the World Volume 2 - The Middle Ages
(chapters 1 - 18)
We are SO enjoying all things Castles, Knights, Swords and Chivalry.  I thought it would be hard to beat the fun and whimsy of Ancients in Volume I, but this second volume does not dissapoint.

Some of our favorite books from this unit:
Favorite Medieval Tales, Celtic Fairy Tales, Beowulf, Once a Mouse, Two of Everything, Long Po Po, Yeh Shen: A Cinderella Story From China, Little Oh, East O' the Sun and West O' the Moon, Saint George and the Dragon, The Inch High Samurai

RiverTeach your Child to read in 100 Easy Lessons (lessons 55-70)
I was pretty relaxed with official "reading" time with River, mainly because he was my entertainment for Ryder a good part of the school morning and also because I learned with Scout that I don't want to "push" reading to quickly and cause River to become frustrated.  We focused more on BOBs books, which unlike Scout, he loves and has no problem reading over and over and over again : ) We are also slowly started The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading very slowly and keeping it fun and upbeat.

Independent Readers:  BOBs books, Levels 1 - 5 from Carrie Lane's "book boost" list

PHONICS/ WRITING/ READING
River Explode The Code level 1
River was VERY excited about starting this book after doing all 3 primer levels.  He LOVES it and it meets several needs and really simplifies things for me.  Unlike Scout did, River goes nice and slow and really makes sure everything is done well, so this series is working really well for him.

What We're Reading - Fall 2013

Our Family Read-Aloud:  Mary Poppins Comes Back by P. L. Travers.
We are thoroughly enjoying the magic and whimsy of Mary Poppins in this sequel to the classic.  I found the library edition on Amazon last spring for an amazing price.  It was a birthday gift for Scout after we saw Mary Poppins on Broadway and we are just getting around to reading it.  The book is packed with very long chapters but every page is filled with colorful characters and delicious magical surprises at every turn.
