What we're reading - Winter

   Our Family Read-Alouds:
Mary Poppins by P. L, Travers
This started as Scout's read aloud and then River quickly jumped right in.  I am amazed at how much his little attention span has grown in just a couple of months.  The kids loved every minute of this magical adventure.  To be honest, I have mixed feelings about the Mary Poppins character, but the kids didn't seem to find her mean at all and they pronounced her their favorite character upon finishing the book.  I do think Disney captured the essence of the book in their classic cinema adaptation and utilized the best parts of the book to create an enjoyable and entertaining interpretation.  I almost always prefer a book to the movie, but in this case they are both entertaining in their own right.  We are looking forward to reading more of Travers' Mary Poppins books.

Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio.
Hmmm... What to say about this strange book... I'm glad we have finally finished it.  Overall, I'm glad we read it and, thank God, it had a happy and somewhat sensible ending, but it was a trippy, rather creepy story.  My favorite things about the book:
1.  The illustrations.  The book we checked out from the library had amazing illustrations.  Each one had a different interpretation of the characters, particulary Pinocchio, so that was very interesting,
2.  Each Chapter is roughly 2 -3 pages long (until the last few chapters) so it's perfect for bedtime reading.  (although with 36 chapters, it did take us well over a month to finish)
We are watching the Disney movie this weekend to celebrate completing the book and we are all looking forward to it.  Again, my guess is that Disney has made the best of this bizarre tale.

Mary Cassatt: Portrait of an American Impressionist  Scout's Read-Alouds:
Mary Cassatt: Portrait of an American Impressionist.
Scout actually requested to study Mary Cassatt and we have enjoyed reading this biography.  Nothing fancy, but Scout seems to like following all the little details of her life.  I think she likes that she was a bit of a rebel and liked to do things her own way : )

Roman Myths by Andrew Masters.   This goes along with our Story of The World curriculum and we have enjoyed reading each of these classic Roman myths and legends.

River's Read-Alouds:
Micawber by John Lithgow.  This is definitely River's favorite book right now. Super cute book! Scout loves that she could recognize the names of the famous artist mentioned in the book.  River says he has seen Micawber in our backyard with paint on his tail : )

The Complete Adventures of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter.  This was a fairly quick read with only 4 chapters. The illustrations are beautiful.

Ally's current reads:
A Year Of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
